Never had one of these so I decided to try it out o.o

Umm are you using photoshop? You can use the stroke effect on lettering, or maybe an outer glow would outline the text, if your using Gimp im afraid I dont know anything about that but im sure someone else will

Ah I could explain that for photoshop [hope it goes the same for gimp]
Goes like this :
-go to blending mode of the layer that you put the text in
-look for outer/inner glow [should be around there in gimp too I belive]
-in photoshop at those 2 modes you get to adjust them (like size,spread,opacity,noise)[no ideea if its the same for gimp but they should be around in there
-play with those settings until you get the glow what you want it to look like
